| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of predictive equations for the calculation of basal metabolec rate (BMR) in healthy Chinese adults. Two hundred and twenty three healty individuals (102 males and 121 females from 20 to 78 years old) were included in this study . The measured metabolic rate and predicted metabolic rate calculated from five equations (including Harris and Benedict Equation, HBE) commonly used to estimate metabolec rate were compared. Our results showed that these equations overestimated BMR by 8 to 24% for healthy Chinese. The measured values were overpredicted by 8 to 21% for men and by 8 to 31% for women. Although there significant correlations between measured and predicted BMR with using the HBE (men, r=0.80, p=0.0001; women, r=0.53, p=0.0001), the HBE overestimated BMR by 8±8% for men and by 19±11% for women if compared with measured BMR. These findings suggested that the currently available predictive equadtions could not accurately estimate the BMR of healthy Chinese adults. |
