Ultrasonography has been suggested by some authors as a noninvasive method for antenatal detection of meconium- stained amniotic fluid. Two cases of homogeneous echogenic amniotic fluid detected by ultrasonography antenatally are presented. Sonographic examination of case 1 at 38 weeks' gestation demonstrated cloudy amniotic fluid, a finding noted in previous reports to be consistent with vernix caseosa. Case 2 had extremely dense amniotic fluid demonstrated by sonographic examination at 39 weeks' gestation. The echogenicity of the amniotic fluid was nearly identical to the placenta, and neither the walls of the umbilical vessels nor the outline of the cord could be clearly identified. both mothers delivered healthy basies with abundant vernix. More studies are necessary to clarify the clinical significance of ultrasonographically dense amniotic fluid.#C 2493066
